Without a doubt. There are many angles to this philosophy. E. coli is the best understood organism on the face of the planet and a model for all living things. Rather than ask pedestrian questions, we go after the big questions about E. coli in the intestine.

This site is setup to engage students in doing research and promote science within the greater community. Too often, research is thought to only exist in a laboratory setting and prevents real progress from being made.

Students entering my lab find out how such a small organism can reorganize their life. While it means tremendous sacrifice, nothing ever important is ever accomplished without sacrifice. Learning to work with E. coli as a model organism teaches life lessons that can make students successful in careers including research, dentistry, pharmacology, and medicine.
